Part Six:

THE PUSH

Emeri and the four marines watched just long enough to ensure the Elsara and the two humans made it a suitable distance down the maintenance corridor before continuing on. Based on the frequency with which the Sardon ship shuddered and the lights flickered, the vessel was in full-scale conflict with the Resolution. If there was another full platoon of marines aboard in addition to this team, the Royal General’s crew would certainly be taking measures to ensure this ship wasn’t outright destroyed, especially if their goal was to take control of it. But Emeri dreaded the thought of still being present here if something went awry, which wasn’t uncommon in an orbital battle like this.

The sounds of distant shouts, small-scale explosions, and gunfire echoed from what seemed like all directions. Even a full marine platoon would be outnumbered by the Sardon crew on a ship this size, but then again, at least a portion of those Sardons would be mere crew. The ones the team had killed in the brig weren’t trained soldiers and were prepared to fight only to the best of their abilities, which ultimately made them easy pickings. Maybe by now the marines would have whittled down the enemy numbers enough that the remainder of this mission could be conducted with no resistance.

“I should be so lucky,” Emeri muttered to himself as his ears picked up the sound of thundering footsteps approaching ahead.

The five of them immediately parted, three of them pressing against one wall and two against the other. Down the barrel of his rifle, Emeri watched as eight Sardons advanced toward them, a group of soldiers escorting three crewmen. Preoccupied as they were with what was behind them—were they being pursued?—it took them an extra second to notice the ground team. By the time they did, Three and Five had dropped the first two men in the procession, but the remaining soldiers reacted swiftly and hustled the three crewmen into cover behind one of the rib-like support beams.

Across the way, Baez stood with his back pressed flat against the wall, leaning out every so often to alternate shots with Four while Three crouched and fired on the Sardons from a lower angle. Below Emeri, Five knelt and did the same. White-hot plasma bolts whizzed down the corridor, narrowly missing their heads in the confined space. Emeri leaned out, his weapon at an angle that allowed his body to remain as concealed as possible, and fired at the first thing he saw. His round struck one of the crewmen in the lower leg.

With their specialty projectile weapons, every shot counted. Plasma weapons didn’t necessarily have infinite firing capabilities, but they certainly lasted longer than slugthrowers with fixed-capacity mags. The team carried extra mags for both their rifles and sidearms, but if they found themselves caught in too many more firefights like this, they’d burn through that ammo fast.

There was a brief lull in Sardon fire as the two soldiers on either side of the
